PHILIPPINE HEART CENTER
The country's center for excellence in cardiovascular care and training
DEPARTMENT OF ADULT CARDIOLOGY
Early mentors and pioneers included prominent cardiologists such as Dr. Hernani Garcia, Dr. Jose Yulde, and Dr. Jose Villaroman, who also laid the foundation for echocardiography training in the Philippines. The Philippine Heart Center fellowship in Adult Cardiology became one of the earliest accredited training programs by the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and Philippine College of Physicians (PCP). The fellowship was structured as a 3-year program, patterned after international standards. Philippine Heart Center soon became a primary training ground for Filipino cardiologists, producing many who would later become leaders, department heads, and subspecialists in hospitals worldwide.
By the 1980s–1990s, Philippine Heart Center was already training not just general cardiologists but also subspecialists in Interventional Cardiology, Non-invasive Cardiology, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Heart Failure, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Critical Care Medicine. These subspecialty fellowships further cemented Philippine Heart Center as the premier cardiology training hub in the country.
To date, the Philippine Heart Center’s Adult Cardiology fellowship is regarded as the country’s center for excellence in cardiovascular care and training.
The Philippine Heart Center (PHC), established February 14, 1975 via Presidential Decree No. 673, became a premier center for specialized cardiac care and training. Its creation was part of the Specialized National Hospitals project envisioned by then-First Lady Imelda Marcos. The goal was to have world-class institutions in the Philippines dedicated to specialty care. Modeled after renowned international institutions, the Philippine Heart Center was meant to combine patient care, research, and education & training.
From its inception, the Philippine Heart Center was envisioned not just as a hospital, but as a training institution. The Department of Adult Cardiology was established in the late 1970s, offering structured training to physicians who wanted to specialize in cardiovascular medicine.
